Recommended repositories for publication and long-term storage of data related to offshore research

Background
RWSC is maintaining a list of data repositories for publishing offshore research data that would be indexable by a future Atlantic Offshore Research Data Catalog. By sharing data through one of the repositories listed below, data holders can improve the chances that their data will contribute to the greater body of knowledge about offshore research by making that data discoverable and reusable. This document is licensed as CC-BY and RWSC encourages anyone working with wildlife, offshore development, or related ocean data to reuse it.
The RWSC defines a data repository as:
A persistent, findable, searchable entity that provides infrastructure for long-term storage and access to data. It should provide for data publication by data holders, as well as access for using/reusing data. RWSC glossary
The list below is a reflection of ongoing engagement and conversations with data stewards and staff associated with the repositories and other data places identified by RWSC Subcommittees and in the Science Plan for all expected types of offshore research data. RWSC Subcommittees are continuing to support the use and description of existing data workflows and, in collaboration with data stewards, identify specific enhancements and capacity needs to support critical data infrastructure into the future. Future RWSC outputs from this body of work will include:
- Revisions and updates to the table below as new and improved data solutions come online
- Recommended enhancements and capacity needs for existing and new repositories that would ensure long-term preservation of data (co-developed with relevant data stewards, data managers, and other responsible entities)
RWSC recognizes that government agencies may require data to be submitted to specific places not listed here, and that there are data places and platforms that do not meet the RWSC definition of data repository but provide value to the research community for search and analysis. Whenever possible, we encourage data holders to also publish data to one of the repositories listed below to ensure that data is available to the wider community, preserved in a long term archive, and indexable by the future Catalog. If publishing in a domain-specific repository listed below, data holders will exceed the RWSC essential metadata guidelines, however if publishing in a generalist repository such as Zenodo or Figshare, it is strongly recommended to follow these guidelines.
How to use this table
Begin by finding the category of data you’d like to publish (left column). If you are working with the RWSC Data Management and Sharing Plan template1, you will recognize these categories. Second, find the type of data you will be collecting (middle column), and the recommended repository(ies) will be listed in the right column. If there are multiple repositories listed, the order does not convey any preference or priority. Rather, each researcher should choose a recommended repository for that data type that is the best fit for the data or other research output.
